Commonwealth Motorcycles Turbo Ducati Diavel So Far @ 235RWHP

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

Basically, this all started sittin’ around smokin’ Ceegars and dreamin’! In order to keep our head mechanic/service manager occupied for the winter, we decided to have a go. No one was looking at practical. No one cared about beauty, we just wanted to do it and so we are! Not a practical modification, and yeah, it may scrap the wastegate on a serious right hand corner. Not planning on making kits……. But we got first bragging rights and would build one for you! LOL! We apologize to the Ducati Diavel community if we offend. But we are having a hell of a lot of fun!

First we started out stripping a brand new Red Carbon Diavel, with 0 miles on the odo……

Posted Image

Then we ordered some goodies…….

Posted Image

Posted Image

Then we sent her off for some custom inconel work….

Posted Image

We had the exhaust built and the airbox….. I personally like the looks of the dual exhaust,
but our master builder (Chad Wells) preferred it this way…..

Posted Image

Posted Image

We have been working on some plumbing, and added a PC to boost fuel. We were hoping to get a PC that also allowed timing adjustments,
but we couldn’t for what ever reason……

Posted Image

Also, added a fuel pressure regulator, since the stock one wouldn’t be able to handle the demand…..

Some of the plumbing …

Work is progressing.. We found that we were running out of fuel on boost, so decided to go with a different fuel pump.
Went with a superbike base to house the new fuel pump. Next trip is more Dyno tuninig time, when we find the time that is!
Been busy with other work(no worries we still have time for your project!)
Currently, with about 6 psi of boost we are well over 200 hp and high torque values coming in at low RPMs.
Can’t wait to get back on this and find out what she will do when we push to the 8-9 psi we planned on. Stay tuned!

With some guidance from our good friend D.L. we managed to coax out

235 rear wheel HP at 131 ft/lb torque. Not bad for a mild tune!  2/12 @store.commoto.com

Motorcycle USA highlights its selection for Best Street Bike of 2011 and the winner is…

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/2/11869/Motorcycle-Article/Best-Street-Bike-2011–Ducati-Multistrada-.aspx

11_ADVTouringShootout-19.jpg

It’s no surprise the Ducati Multistrada repeats as Street Bike of the Year in 2011. At least it’s no surprise to anyone who’s ridden one. The ‘Strada proved one of the most exciting bikes to debut in the 2010 model year, with its gorgeous Italian lines backed up by a fire-breathing engine and stellar chassis. Nothing changed in 2011.

The Multistrada delivers Superbike-level performance, but proffers touring grade comfort from its upright, relaxed riding position. The Multi sources the same 1198-derrived engine as the Diavel, but employs its 132 rear wheel horsepower and 81 lb-ft of torque in a smoother manner. Then there are the brakes, top-shelf kit from Brembo and the sporty suspension setup. The Multistrada 1200 S that we sourced for our 2011 Adventure-Touring Shootout one-ups the suspension package with Ohlins components. The Ducati plain shreds on pavement, with sick road performance.

The one caveat we have with the new ‘Strada carries over from last year, as it lacks the durability required to excel in its marketed Adventure-Touring role. As an off-road AT mount the Multistrada is miscast, able to play the part but not excelling. As high-performance street bike, however, it’s difficult to imagine things getting any better on the road.

Ducati isnt quite as dominant in the torque department but it still easily sweeps up these competitors with just under 81 lb-ft.

NEW 2012 Diavel in Stock Today – Named Best Cruiser

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/2/11867/Motorcycle-Article/Best-Cruiser-2011–Ducati-Diavel.aspx

This just in from Motorcycle-USA.com

11_strtfghtr_barona-53.jpg

In the age of teaser videos, “spy” photos and orchestrated leaks, it’s difficult for a motorcycle to live up to its hype. Not so with the Ducati Diavel. The long-rumored Italian “power cruiser” is a genre-bending bike to be sure. While it dons a cruiser-ish stance, fat rear tire and low-slung looks, there’s the insane sportbike engine power, top-class brakes and advanced electronics.

The 2012 Ducati Diavel looks ready to rumble at Barona Drag Strip.
The Ducati Diavel was one of the strangest rides to debut in 2011. It’s also one of the most fun to ride!

Motorcycle USA couldn’t get enough of the Diavel in 2011, testing it multiple times to figure out just what the hell the Italian devil really was. In our Performance Cruiser Shootout it completely decimated its supposed competition. Adding it to our Streetfighter Comparison it finally met its match against nimbler rivals. Even so, the Diavel proved its premium performance – smoking the likes of the Speed Triple and Z1000 in 0–60 and quarter-mile tests. We also had a ball thrashing the new Duc at a trackday too. Try that on a typical cruiser!

With its Testastretta engine spinning out 137 rear-wheel horsepower, the Diavel tosses cruiser conventions on their head. Wheel-lofting fun in the cruiser class? Yes, sir. And that Ducati Twin is rich in character too, with a blissful exhaust note. Amazingly, the adrenaline-jacking powerplant is easily tamed with advanced electronic aids. The Diavel bristles with technology: Three switchable riding modes, adjustable Ducati Traction Control, ABS which can be deactivated manually, top-shelf Brembo monobloc brakes, fully adjustable Marzocchi fork and Sachs shock, slipper clutch…

MotoUSA tabs the Diavel as cruiser of the year fully acknowledging its status as a bona fide cruiser is shaky, at best. That said, we praise it for shattering the performance expectations in a riding genre that hews firm to tradition, maybe a little too firm.

TurboDiavel006 2 Ducati Diavel Turbo

The Ducati Diavel is already one fast performance cruiser scoot but the folks at Commonwealth motorcycles wanted a winter project and well, wouldn’t it be better with a turbocharger?

Why choose the Diavel. Easy says Chad Wells :-

“…because it is so damn cool! I think the styling is gorgeous, the design and overall appearance for a sport cruiser is superb. The classic Ducati single sided swing-arm, machined wheels, matching machined rotors, etc….. With the mufflers gone we were able to open up the whole right hand side of the bike. You see the beefy swing arm and all of the killer looking wheel now. It just showcases what Ducati had hidden behind humdrum mufflers. “

Ducati Diavel Turbo Ducati Diavel Turbo

Another reason to do a turbocharger conversion on the Ducati Diavel is because, to date, nobody else has and so the allure to be first is attractive. Chad again:-

“I planned on being first one in country or world to do this, and it looks like I am. I hope Ducati enthusiasts will enjoy it and be excited to see the finished product. I don’t think we will develop or sell kits, but you never know. We had been selling a few Diavels at the dealership and when riding them I was really surprised with the whole package. I fell in love with the bike but felt there was something missing!”

With a long wheelbase and a big fat tire, the Diavel is probably uniquely suited to handling even more power than the stock Testastretta 11º kicks out since, unlike most other performance cruiser options, it has highly specialized suspension, wheels and brakes straight from the factory. On 8 lbs of boost currently the turbo Diavel boasts 236bhp and 130 ft/lbs on pump fuel! There’s a word for that – plenty.”
