Putnam Park History
In 1990, Richard L. Diasio saw a need for a road course in Indiana that was devoted to club racers. He designed Putnam Park Road Course to be safe, fast, and challenging. Also, he wanted to build a circuit that could be viewed in its entirety from the pits, so that both participants and crew could be a part of the action at all times. Putnam Park was constructed in 1991 on 202 rolling acres just west of Indianapolis.
Preparation:The key to a great experience is great preparation.
Prepare your bike for the track.
Track rules take precedence and if the track rules do not conflict, here are the guidelines:
– All expert bikes with no antifreeze and no glycol based products!
– Kickstands: Kickstand removal is not required for the novice and intermediate group. Kickstand removal is STRONGLY encouraged for advanced group riders.
– Centerstands: It is highly recommended that centerstands be removed due to clearance issues for all groups but not required in novice or intermediate. Centerstands are required to be removed in the advanced group.
– Your bike in top mechanical condition (no leaking fluids)with new or near new tires,
– All glass, headlight(s), turn signals, and plastic lenses must be taped over or removed.
– Both mirrors must be removed or taped over.
– Proper safety gear for the racetrack which includes:
full gauntlet gloves, full face helmet, motorcycle riding boots, one or two-piece leathers. Two piece leathers must attach and zip together with a full zipper.
– Textile riding suit w/full zipper in student class only
– Check the chain for lubrication, tight spots and overall tension
– All motorcycles must have an operational handlebar mounted kill switch/button and self-closing throttle in good working condition.
– All bodywork must be mounted securely
– Valve stems must have caps to prevent foreign objects from causing leaks
– Secured wheel weights (taped)
– No fur or decorative, non functional accessories (They may inhibit movement or distract other riders.)
– Expert riders are required to have back protectors.
We will have tech inspection each morning that we ride. We will be checking the following items: helmet, boots, leathers or textile suits, back protector (Intermediate, Advanced), tire tread depth and condition, hand lever functionality, foot level functionality, kill switch, chain tension, coolant, properly taped up lights, exhaust bolts, and general condition (possible loose nuts, bolts.)If you crash (handlebars hit the ground or other solid object like a wall or tree, rider hits the ground or other solid object like a wall or tree), you must have your bike and gear reinspected before you can go out in subsequent sessions.
Items to bring
Everyone has different wants and needs at the racetrack.
We list a few items here, but below this list is a definitive look from Sport Rider magazine to help you get everything prepared for your day at the track.
easy up (cover)
masking tape or duct tape
spare brake lever – front and rear
spare clutch lever and shift lever
(The last one-nothing worse than having your bike fall off the trailer and snap a clutch lever and not being able to ride.)
YELLOW – Waving or standing. There is a hazard coming up, slow your pace and watch for it. After passing the hazard you may resume riding, but make note where that hazard is and watch for the flag again.
BLACK – If pointed at you, exit the track and talk to track personnel. There may be something wrong with your bike, or something that you did wasn’t safe. One way or another, exit and talk with the Elite Sportbike Track Marshall.
RED – Waving (usually) There is an emergency situation, SLOW your pace and expect to exit the track when you reach pit lane. DO NOT STOP. DO NOT HELP. Watch for objects on the track, and proceed to the pit lane.
CHECKERED – The session is over, exit the track.
It is customary to signal the corner worker that you see their flag – either a hand up, or foot out – the same as you would signal to exit the track to pit lane.
Note: At the start of the first session for each group, there will be a yellow flag for two laps to help riders locate the corner workers.
Once again – keep in mind that these rules exist for your safety, and the safety of others. Don’t think of bike preparation as a chore, but rather an opportunity to get familiar with your bike.
Bike preparation shouldn’t be an excuse for purchasing parts you may (or may not) want to buy. If you look back through the list we covered, there are actually very few tools or items you’ll need to buy in order to prepare your bike.
As a final note – think of this list as things that you should do, regardless of inspection rules for the track. Keeping your bike in good shape is common sense and should be done whether you’re riding on the track or not!
